Charles Sampson is the focus of this week’s Senior Spotlight. Unfortunately, he is unable to play this season due to a leg injury. Charles joined the team during his freshman year in the Fall of 2016. Before coming to UConn, Charles competed in football and wrestling at Derby High School, where he graduated Valedictorian of his class. He is currently majoring in Computer Science with a concentration in cyber security. This has led him to intern in Tewksbury, MA at Raytheon, a government defense contractor, this past summer. After college Charles will work for Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems division in Tewksbury, Massachusetts and plans to eventually earn a master’s degree in a relevant computer science field.
Charles is the current website manager for the UConn Men’s Rugby Club, but that is not all. He has made a large contribution to the club’s community service hours by volunteering at nearly all of the Special Olympics events that the club has been a part of. Charles’s involvement in the UConn community does not stop there. He is also the current Vice President of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, a computer science honor society, that helps tutor other computer science students. Additionally, Charles was able to take the opportunity to study abroad while at UConn. In Fall 2018, he studied for a semester at University College Dublin, in Dublin, Ireland, where he was able to immerse himself in the Irish culture and improve his rugby skills by playing with the University College Dublin Rugby Football Club.
Charles has been a valuable asset to the UConn Men’s Rugby Club during his time with the team and he is the spotlight this week as we take on the Tufts Jumbo’s at home this week. The game kicks off at 1 P.M. at Depot Campus Field.
