UConn participated in the 2016 Tri-State 7’s Tournament on Saturday, June 25th, 2016 in Danbury, CT. UConn finished the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record in pool play, and a 4-1 record overall. The day started with UConn defeating Buddha Rugby, Western Connecticut State University, and the Hartford Wanders to win their pool and advance to a semifinals match-up with the Fairfield Yankees B-side. UConn then advanced to the tournament final, which was a rematch of the opening game against Buddah Rugby. UConn lost the rematch 26-21, and took home second place in its first 7’s Tournament of the summer.
When asked about the team’s effort today Captain Joe Phillips said “I thought the guys were outstanding today. It’s not easy to play five rugby games in the sweltering heat, but every game we came out and attacked like it was the first one of the day. Just over the course of one tournament you could see us start to gel and put the pieces together. Although a second place finish wasn’t the result we came in looking for, we left everything on the field, and for that I couldn’t be prouder. At this point all I’m thinking about is next tournament.”
When asked about how the team performed today, and what he expects to see from the team in the next tournament Senior Matt Cozzi said “The guys seemed to be progressing as the day went on, which is always exciting to see. Some bad mental mistakes cost us toward the end (of the tournament). I expect us to win.”
