UConn 55 – Fairfield 14

The boys took home another win this weekend. UConn defeated Fairfield University 55-14. The team dominated the field as they continued to perform and put up points throughout the entire game. This win puts UConn at 4-0 overall, 3-0 in the conference play. The B side took home another solid win, leaving them undefeated as well.

“Another nice sunny day in Storrs, Connecticut as UConn comes away with a solid victory over Fairfield University 55-14.

Senior captain Joe Phillips at OC started the UConn try-scoring campaign at the seven-minute mark as he broke free down the far sideline and outraced Fairfield defenders to turn the corner and touchdown a center try easily converted by fly-half Auggie Coll.

Following a penalty kick, UConn went up 10 nothing but then turned the ball over to a strong running Fairfield pack that put Fairfield on the board 10-7.

UConn responded quickly in the next 10 minutes with a try from number 8 Nic Labranche and Phillips, 2nd try of the half at the 33-minute mark to put UConn on top 24-7 at half.

Fairfield kept the ball in hand and forced UConn into several defensive stands and maintained solid possession to start the second half.

Once UConn  was able to get their hands on the ball, they were able score two quality passing backline tries. But at the same time, Fairfield came up with one of the most powerful runs of the day by their outside center who took the ball and several UConn players 22m for a score under the posts. 38-14 UConn lead with 18m remaining.

UConn then went on a scoring blitz touching down 3 times with 2 scores by flanker Adam Angelucci, making the final score 55-14.

“Our defense in the first 20 minutes of the match kept us in the game,” said Coach Merola. “Fairfield was very good at maintaining possession but once we had the ball in our hands, our backline was able to attack and passed quickly allowing us to score some nice tries.

Looking forward to our next match up with Boston College next Saturday, hopefully maintaining quality of play.”

Sunday, the team had its annual alumni game with a good turnout from our alumni ranging from recent grads to those who played in the 80’s. The support our team receives from the alumni is what is helping to bring UConn rugby to the next level. A big thanks to all that could make it.
