UConn 37 – URI 30
UConn Rugby goes to 4-0 in Liberty conference play, overall 5-1 as they defeat URI 37-30 at home.
Teams traded scores in first 20 minutes and UConn led 19-10 at 40th minute but gave up PK at whistle as URI cut deficit to 19-13.
Chris Mao #10 with a try and 2 conversions and James Courtney #8 (2 tries) paced UConn first half.
As 2nd half started URI scores quickly and takes 19-20 lead at 44 minute mark. Next 10 minutes saw UConn open up their running game, as Toback #2 found gap and took tip pass from front row mate Elliot #1 scoring under posts. Mao followed up with the conversion and put up two PK’s.. 32-20.
URI was not done yet and rallied to score PK 32-23, but Adam Angelucci #7 swerved his way to 25 meter try to put UConn up 37-23 at 65 minutes.
But URI with some powerful running and good ball retention scored and converted a try at 69 minutes to cut lead to 37-30. UConn held defensively as URI pounded away for next 5 minutes until UConn was able regroup and hold on for win.
“We knew this be tough game going in with some good hard running URI forwards/backs, we managed to tie down the win with a great defensive effort last 15 minutes of game”…said Coach Bob Merola.
“We will take hard fought win and hopefully play well next week vs strong Northeastern team as New England Divisional title is at stake.”
UConn 2nd team remains undefeated with 6-0 record.
